What does abbreviation “CEREC” mean? It is an abbreviated name of Chairside Economical Restorations Esthetic Ceramic. This can be explained in a following way: device for economic and esthetic ceramic restoration. There is also another version which reflects the sense of method: CEramic REConstruction – it is ceramic reconstruction. Both explanations fully reflect sense and task of this equipment, although now it is rather complicated to call this device just equipment.

We will try to explain how tooth reconstruction procedure takes place when using CEREC method.

There are several teeth restoration ways – namely:

• inlay; they are used in case of insignificant teeth damages;
• crowns; they are used if big part of tooth crown is damaged;

Tooth preparation for CEREC reconstruction practically does not differ much from the classical one, but further there is a significant difference in methods – instead of traditional reproduction we use three-dimension video camera, but instead of reproduction paste and modules – main storage of computer. Zone in which restoration will be made is covered with white powder card which shows optimal conditions for creating a reproduction. Then with a help of 3D camera this image is recorded in a screen of monitor and dentist starts making a construction. Unlike handwork of a technician, a doctor shapes a missing part of a tooth on a screen of monitor, thoroughly marking its edges. An image is magnified 12 times, wherewith it is possible to significantly increase accuracy of construction. When all lines are set, computer calculates the size of plug or crown and transmits this data to grinding block which is operated in 6 axles and grinds a needed construction with high accuracy. In 10-20 minutes depending on a level of complexity a plug or a crown is ready and it’s fitting and fixing can be started.

In a laboratory, at best, this procedure takes from 1 to 3 hours.

When construction is finished, grinding block starts its work. When a form is ready fitting process takes place when small details are adjusted, and then painting starts. Glazing layer is put on the outside area with relevant dyes and plate is baked in a stove with 960°C. After this burn crown has natural color. With a help of dyes it is possible to obtain a perfect cosmetic effect.

As it is seen from the described procedure, we achieve in a various way:

• Significant gain of time – all work from preparation to fixing is done during one visit.
• As modeling takes place with magnification of 12 times, it provides maximum accurate production possibility.
• Fixing of construction is done in a short time period and damage possibility of dentine and enamel as a result of outward influence is excluded, and this enables good material “sticking” to tooth tissues and protection against secondary caries.
  

CEREC method is being used aboard since 1985. We have been working with this technology since 1995. Percentage of reshaping cases is from 0,5 to 2,5% (for comparison – plastic plugs: reshaping percentage after 3-5 is from 40 to 65%).
